The feast of Saint Panteleimon, celebrated on July 26th, is one of the most beloved religious and cultural events on the island of Skyros. In fact, two different celebrations take place on this day, honoring Saint Panteleimon in two distinct areas of the island: Marmaro, above the village of Peuko, and Trachy, near the airport. Both festivals are opportunities for prayer, community gathering, and the revival of the island’s traditions.
The festival in Marmaro, located above Peuko, is a particularly picturesque event. The area of Marmaro is known for its beautiful location, offering views that stretch over the lush landscape of Skyros and the sea. At the heart of the celebration is the church of Saint Panteleimon, which hosts a large number of faithful who come to honor the memory of the Saint.
The day begins with a Divine Liturgy, where worshippers gather to pray and seek the Saint’s blessing. After the service, there is the traditional artoklasia, where the breads brought by the attendees are blessed, followed by a shared meal of traditional Skyrian delicacies. The festival continues with music and dance, where locals and visitors enthusiastically participate, reviving the island’s traditions and dances.
The festival in Trachy, located near the Skyros airport, is equally important and traditional. The church of Saint Panteleimon in Trachy holds deep religious significance for the locals, serving as a center of prayer and pilgrimage.
As in Marmaro, the day starts with a Divine Liturgy, followed by a procession of the icon of Saint Panteleimon around the church grounds. The faithful actively participate in the ceremonies, offering vows and prayers for the health and well-being of their families.
After the religious events, the festival turns into a celebration with music and dancing. Attendees enjoy traditional Skyrian songs and dances, as the community comes together in a celebration that lasts late into the night.
